ﻋِﻨﺪَﻣَﺎ ﻛَﺎﻧَﺖ ﺍَﻟﻤَﺪِﻳﻨَﺔُ ﺗُﻐَﺎﺩِﺭُﻧِﻲ
I was standing by its sunset.4
kuntu 'aqifu 3indu maghiibihaa
ﻛُﻨﺖُ ﺃَﻗِﻒُ ﻋِﻨﺪُ ﻣَﻐِﻴﺒِﻬَﺎ
Just to hear the echo of the ten commandments.4
faqaT li'usmi3u Sadaa lwaSiyyaa al3ashari
ﻓَﻘَﻂ ﻟِﺄُﺳﻤِﻊُ ﺻَﺪَﻯ ﺍﻟﻮَﺻِﻴَّﺎ ﺍَﻟﻌَﺸَﺮِ

The old lady said to me:4
qaalat liial3ajuuzu
ﻗَﺎﻟَﺖ ﻟِﻴﺎَﻟﻌَﺠُﻮﺯُ
I wanted to be roots4
'aradtu 'an 'akuuna judhuuran
ﺃَﺭَﺩﺕُ ﺃَﻥ ﺃَﻛُﻮﻥَ ﺟُﺬُﻭﺭﺍً
and you took my branches.4
faiqtala3tum 'aghSaanii
ﻓَﺎِﻗﺘَﻠَﻌﺘُﻢ ﺃَﻏﺼَﺎﻧِﻲ

The neighbour said to me:4
qaalat liialjaaratu
ﻗَﺎﻟَﺖ ﻟِﻴﺎَﻟﺠَﺎﺭَﺓُ
Here are other footsteps4
haa hiya khuTwaat 'ukhraa
ﻫَﺎ ﻫِﻲَ ﺧُﻄﻮَﺍﺕ ﺃُﺧﺮَﻯ
that are missing from the stairs of the building.4
tanquSu min daraji albinaa'i
ﺗَﻨﻘُﺺُ ﻣِﻦ ﺩَﺭَﺝِ ﺍَﻟﺒِﻨَﺎﺀِ

The waiter at the café said to me:4
qaala lii naadilu lmaqhaa
ﻗَﺎﻝَ ﻟِﻲ ﻧَﺎﺩِﻝُ ﺍﻟﻤَﻘﻬَﻰ
Enjoy your coffee cold4
istamti3 biqahwatika baaridatan
ﺍِﺳﺘَﻤﺘِﻊ ﺑِﻘَﻬﻮَﺗِﻚَ ﺑَﺎﺭِﺩَﺓً
as you like it, in the countries without heat.4
kamaa tuHibbu fii bilaadin bilaa dif'
ﻛَﻤَﺎ ﺗُﺤِﺐُّ ﻓِﻲ ﺑِﻠَﺎﺩٍ ﺑِﻠَﺎ ﺩِﻑﺀ

The child said do me:4
qaala lii aTTiflu
ﻗَﺎﻝَ ﻟِﻲ ﺍَﻟﻄِّﻔﻞُ
You did not play like a child the way I do.4
lam talhu mithlii Tiflan
ﻟَﻢ ﺗَﻠﻪُ ﻣِﺜﻠِﻲ ﻃِﻔﻠﺎً
I will play on your streets and on the threshold to your old house.4
sa'a3bathu bishiwaari3ka wa3ind 3atabati baytika al3atiiqi
ﺳَﺄَﻋﺒَﺚُ ﺑِﺸِﻮَﺍﺭِﻋﻚَ ﻭَﻋِﻨﺪ ﻋَﺘَﺒَﺔِ ﺑَﻴﺘِﻚَ ﺍَﻟﻌَﺘِﻴﻖِ

The asphalt said to me:4
qaalat lii l'asfalt
ﻗَﺎﻟَﺖ ﻟِﻲ ﺍﻟﺄَﺳﻔَﻠﺖ
Burning ... frosty, this is me.4
multahiban... Saqii3iyyan hadhaa 'anaa
ﻣُﻠﺘَﻬِﺒﺎً... ﺻَﻘِﻴﻌِﻴّﺎً ﻫَﺬَﺍ ﺃَﻧَﺎ
Clinging to the ground not believing in your escape until now.4
mutashabbithun bi'arDin lam yuSaddiq huruubakum ba3da
ﻣُﺘَﺸَﺒِّﺚٌ ﺑِﺄَﺭﺽٍ ﻟَﻢ ﻳُﺼَﺪِّﻕ ﻫُﺮُﻭﺑَﻜُﻢ ﺑَﻌﺪَ

The cemeteries said to me:4
qaalat lii almaqaabiru
ﻗَﺎﻟَﺖ ﻟِﻲ ﺍَﻟﻤَﻘَﺎﺑِﺮُ
There is no desolation here and no fear.4
laa waHshatun hunaa walaa khawfun
ﻟَﺎ ﻭَﺣﺸَﺔٌ ﻫُﻨَﺎ ﻭَﻟَﺎ ﺧَﻮﻑٌ
What awaits you is the frightening nightmare.4
maa yantaZirukum huwa alkaabuusu almufzi3u
ﻣَﺎ ﻳَﻨﺘَﻈِﺮُﻛُﻢ ﻫُﻮَ ﺍَﻟﻜَﺎﺑُﻮﺱُ ﺍَﻟﻤُﻔﺰِﻉُ

The curves said to me:4
qaalat lii almun3aTafaatu
ﻗَﺎﻟَﺖ ﻟِﻲ ﺍَﻟﻤُﻨﻌَﻄَﻔَﺎﺕُ
Gifts of desolation and chaos.4
hadaayaa alwaHshati waaSSakhibi
ﻫَﺪَﺍﻳَﺎ ﺍَﻟﻮَﺣﺸَﺔِ ﻭَﺍَﻟﺼَّﺨِﺐِ
You will not find it in the streets of boring silence.4
lan tajiduuhaa fii shiwaari3i aSSamti almumilli
ﻟَﻦ ﺗَﺠِﺪُﻭﺍﻫَﺎ ﻓِﻲ ﺷِﻮَﺍﺭِﻉِ ﺍَﻟﺼَّﻤﺖِ ﺍَﻟﻤُﻤِﻞِّ

The clouds said to me:4
qaalat lii alghuyuumu
ﻗَﺎﻟَﺖ ﻟِﻲ ﺍَﻟﻐُﻴُﻮﻡُ
You are deluded, you think that you pierced me.4
makhduu3un 'anta taZunnu 'annaka ikhtaraqtanii
ﻣَﺨﺪُﻭﻉٌ ﺃَﻧﺖَ ﺗَﻈُﻦُّ ﺃَﻧَّﻚَ ﺍِﺧﺘَﺮَﻗﺘَﻨِﻲ
You are merely in the depth of the mirage.4
'anta fii 3umqi assaraabi layasa 'illaa
ﺃَﻧﺖَ ﻓِﻲ ﻋُﻤﻖِ ﺍَﻟﺴَّﺮَﺍﺏِ ﻟَﻴَﺲَ ﺇِﻟَّﺎ

qaala lii almanzilu
ﻗَﺎﻝَ ﻟِﻲ ﺍَﻟﻤَﻨﺰِﻝُ
Your nameplate fell from the door.4
saqaTat lawHatu ismika min 3alaa albaabi
ﺳَﻘَﻄَﺖ ﻟَﻮﺣَﺔُ ﺍِﺳﻤِﻚَ ﻣِﻦ ﻋَﻠَﻰ ﺍَﻟﺒَﺎﺏِ
I forgot the heat of your last steps.4
nasiitu dif'a khuTwaatika al'akhiirati
ﻧَﺴِﻴﺖُ ﺩِﻑﺀَ ﺧُﻄﻮَﺍﺗِﻚَ ﺍَﻟﺄَﺧِﻴﺮَﺓِ

ﻋَﺸَﺮ
My father and mother said to me:4
qaala lii 'abii wa'ummii
ﻗَﺎﻝَ ﻟِﻲ ﺃَﺑِﻲ ﻭَﺃُﻣِّﻲ
We will miss your sad, yellow roses.4
sanaftaqidu wardaka aSSafraa'a alHaziinata
ﺳَﻨَﻔﺘَﻘِﺪُ ﻭَﺭﺩَﻙَ ﺍَﻟﺼَّﻔﺮَﺍﺀَ ﺍَﻟﺤَﺰِﻳﻨَﺔَ
You will miss us and you will miss Syria.4
sataftaqidunaa wataftaqidu suuriyyaa
ﺳَﺘَﻔﺘَﻘِﺪُﻧَﺎ ﻭَﺗَﻔﺘَﻘِﺪُ ﺳُﻮﺭِﻳَّﺎ
